Did you know your letdown reflex, also called the milk ejection reflex, needs to happen several times during each feed?

Think of it like this: there’s milk ready and waiting, but the tap needs to turn on several times for your baby to get milk to flow.

When letdown is smooth, these letdowns happen back to back - milk is pushed from your milk-making cells into the ducts, and your baby feeds calmly.
If your letdown is delayed - or doesn’t trigger as easily - at the start or mid-feed, your baby may fuss, pull off, or seem frustrated even when there’s plenty of milk available.

Your letdown reflex relies on oxytocin, the “love and connection” hormone, and oxytocin is sensitive to what’s happening around you. Stress, anxiety, exhaustion, and even noisy environments can make the reflex harder to trigger.

This isn’t about fault, and you’re not doing anything wrong. 💛

Combining 2 passions - art and breastfeeding medicine! Why not!

I have discovered art this year, persuaded by my sister to join her weekly art class (life changing for her after an extremely challenging year). I have managed to squeeze it in amongst all the usual work/life juggle and it has been lovely to sit and (try) to be mindfully in the moment. I am rediscovering my creative side that has been mostly buried for so long. (except for my photography)

So here is my dabble into watercolours - breastfeeding medicine style! Behind the scenes I am creating online breastfeeding courses and needed some diagrams and content. Why not create my own!

Flashback - a “low key” photo I took of my third born child when he was 7 days old. Not quite the tiny little newborn- he was a healthy 4.1kg, but I was still able to cocoon him in a wrap for this photo shoot.

A TIP for those new parents who want to get those cute newborn curled up fetal position photos- it needs to be in the first 7 to 10 days, as they then straighten out!

My first child missed out on the better photos…. I had bought my dSLR but had it in auto mode as didn’t know how to use it! I completed a short photography course 2 weeks before my second child was born - this made such a difference to my photos - I could suddenly take lovely portraits and capture a moving toddler. Then by baby number 3 I was able to experiment more with styles, such as this low key photo. (Dark tones)

Has anyone else had any success with capturing those tiny curled up newborn photos? I’d love to hear about it!

In my experience, the answer is that this nipple pain is usually NOT thrush.

When trying for a baby, how long should you try to conceive before seeing your GP or getting some tests done?

The answer is very individual. We have a general rule of thumb in the medical world that is under 35, then try for 12 months. If over 35 then only try for 6 months, but this doesn’t take into consideration any individual circumstances.

Personally, I like to see my patients before they start trying, to identify if there may be any issues worth considering and to ensure optimal health and preparedness, to advise on timing of intercourse etc, and to make a plan about when to return if not pregnant.

And if you are female and in your late 30’s, go and get advice now!

I often get asked by parents whether their baby’s poop is normal - so I have decided to pull together photos of all types of baby poop and create a photographic poop resource for families.

Gazing out to new horizons.

This Cup Day weekend I was able to once again climb up to the Mt Buller summit with family and friends to together watch the sun set beneath the ever expansive horizon and the rolling hills in the valleys below.

So peaceful, serene and beautiful. Such feelings of awe, and also feeling so small and insignificant in this place of natural beauty.

This Cup Day weekend I was able to once again climb up to the Mt Buller summit with family and friends to together watch the sun set beneath the ever expansive horizon and the rolling hills in the valleys below.

So peaceful, serene and beautiful. Such feelings of awe, and also feeling so small and insignificant in this place of natural beauty.

It was a privilege to join my colleagues @drednalekgabe and @drbiancamastromanno this morning at the Pink Elephants charity run 🏃‍♀️ by Melbourne.

Pink Elephants are a wonderful charity that support people who have experienced miscarriage and pregnancy loss. Despite miscarriage and pregnancy loss being common, there is still a lack of awareness and support. People don’t talk about it enough and many people dont realise the emotional impact and grief that can be experienced.
