Postnatal Home Visits for new mums & babies

Please note that this Home Visit service is currently unavailable.

When trying for a baby, how long should you try to conceive before seeing your GP or getting some tests done?

The answer is very individual. We have a general rule of thumb in the medical world that is under 35, then try for 12 months. If over 35 then only try for 6 months, but this doesn’t take into consideration any individual circumstances.

Personally, I like to see my patients before they start trying, to identify if there may be any issues worth considering and to ensure optimal health and preparedness, to advise on timing of intercourse etc, and to make a plan about when to return if not pregnant.

And if you are female and in your late 30’s, go and get advice now!

Is your nipple pain due to thrush?
In my experience, the answer is that this nipple pain is usually NOT thrush.

What causes those horrible sharp shooting pains through the nipple and breast? It is thought to be spasm of the ductal muscles that is triggered by the inflammation and swelling caused by a poor latch.

Thrush is still commonly diagnosed and treated and may settle a little with this treatment due to its anti inflammatory properties, but the pain usually comes back as the cause of the problem (suboptimal latch) has not been addressed.

Yes, I am creating a baby poop atlas!
I often get asked by parents whether their baby’s poop is normal - so I have decided to pull together photos of all types of baby poop and create a photographic poop resource for families.

I have been taking photos of poop during some of my consultations but for this atlas to be truly great, I need your help to get more photos of a wider range of poop, to add to my collection!

It was a privilege to join my colleagues @drednalekgabe and @drbiancamastromanno this morning at the Pink Elephants charity run 🏃‍♀️ by Melbourne.

Pink Elephants are a wonderful charity that support people who have experienced miscarriage and pregnancy loss. Despite miscarriage and pregnancy loss being common, there is still a lack of awareness and support. People don’t talk about it enough and many people dont realise the emotional impact and grief that can be experienced.

If you or someone you know has experienced miscarriage or pregnancy loss, make sure they are aware of Pink Elephants and the wonderful work they do.

This little guy was so much fun in my consulting room this morning! I am used to the bubs and toddlers exploring my room and getting into mischief, but this little guy was exploring things differently, e.g. he was literally was upside down in my toy box with legs in the air (I wasn’t quick enough to get that photo!) and he then wanted to sit on my lap for his heart and chest stethoscope examination, so sweet!

These types of baby and infant consults make my day and constantly remind me why I love my job!

There are many reasons why many women do not enjoy being pregnant. There is enormous pressure to feel wonderful and happy during their pregnancy, and many people are too scared to admit they are struggling.

It may be they feel sick or uncomfortable, have had a long and stressful fertility journey and can’t relax until bub is born, they might be anxious about the birth & the future, have trauma from a previous experience, feel out of control, or maybe they are struggling with changing body shape and image, the list goes on.

Know that this is common and normal for so many women. You are not alone. Women need to talk more about this, stop pretending it’s all rosy and that they should be glowing. You’ve got this! And remember to connect and reach out to family, friends and health professionals for support if needed.

Whether it be trying for a baby, applying for a new job, deciding to travel abroad, starting a new training course, getting a puppy, learning a new skill or hobby, reconnecting with a friend or loved one…. the list is endless.

Breastfeeding: What NOT to do and why!

Women are told all sorts of different techniques to help get a lovely deep painfree latch.

It’s time to explain why so many of these strategies aren’t helpful, lead to a shallow latch that causes nipple trauma and make your pain and discomfort worse!

5 DON’Ts:
#1 Dont use a feeding pillow at the start of a feed
#2 Don’t sit upright hunched over
#3 Don’t shape your breast
#4 Don’t hold baby’s head
#5 Don’t settle for a painful latch

I have decided to start a series of Perinatal Tips that are inspired both by my work as GP who works exclusively in perinatal care, fertility, women’s and infant health and also inspired by my own personal and family life.

Some of you may have seen my “Perinatal Pearls” series of short videos here on Insta and also on my website, but honestly, I think a quick tip is all that many people have the time and memory for!

So here is the first of my perinatal tips, that I personally find helpful and relevant to my own life, or that I find can make a positive difference to my patients during their perinatal journey.

It is also an excuse and motivation to get me out again taking photos, a hobby that I love but often don’t make time for.

When I take photos I am practising mindfulness. I stop, look around me, notice things that I normally wouldn’t see, take a breath and appreciate the world and people around me. Being in the present moment, with no struggle.

Is your nipple and breast pain really due to nipple thrush?

The short answer? Rarely.

Yes there are treatment protocols, yes things often do get better (eventually) with treatment after long drawn out courses of a antifungal medications, but the reality is, pain that is commonly thought to be thrush is usually due to microtrauma, caused by a suboptimal latch.

I love providing breastfeeding consults to help women get a close, pain free latch. And then what happens? The pain, inflammation and trauma usually settles down and goes away.

Shared care is a model of antenatal pregnancy care in Australia where your appointments are shared by an accredited provider such as a GP, and with the public hospital where you are booked to have your baby. Only those with an uncomplicated, straightforward pregnancy are eligible for this program.

I really enjoy providing shared care. I enjoy providing this continuity of care and find it really rewarding, supporting & caring for patients physically & emotionally, all the way through their perinatal journey, from fertility, through conception, pregnancy and then in the postpartum.

Most antenatal appointments are with the accredited shared care provider, with only 3 or 4 appointments being at the hospital. If any complications arise then the hospital will usually take over your care.

I am currently accredited with several hospitals in Melbourne, including the Royal Women’s Hospital, Werribee Mercy, Mercy, Northern, Sunshine, Eastern Health (Box Hill & Angliss).
